The programme was flagged off with the first edition at Ilupeju Senior Secondary School on Friday, January 25, 2019 as over 400 packs of sanitary pads were distributed to girls in the school.

The Club’s New Generation Chairperson, Rotarian Reena Bangera who noted the project will spread across other secondary schools in the community in the coming months, explained that the essence of the project is to improve girl child education and menstrual hygiene through provision of sanitary packs to the school going girls to avoid absenteeism during their monthly period.
“Our study has highlighted that 20% of the girls from the challenged sections of                     society miss school because they lack access to menstrual hygiene supplies. To                      initiate this project, the club plans to provide sanitary pads to all the 500 girls of                   the Ilupeju senior school every month", Rotarian Bangera said.

According to Rotarian Bangera, “Our study has highlighted that 20% of the girls from the challenged sections of society miss school because they lack access to menstrual hygiene supplies. To initiate this project, the club plans to provide sanitary pads to all the 500 girls of the Ilupeju senior school every month.

“The project also aims at creating awareness about this being a normal phenomenon in girls and it's time the society accepts it rather than something to hide or feel ashamed of. Botswana is the first African country to provide this hygiene pack to the students of all the public schools followed likewise by Kenya and Ghana. We hope and pray the Nigerian Government too starts such an initiative very soon”, she added.

Special Guest Speaker was Mrs Nneka Isaac Moses, the Managing Director of Goge Africa- an African Tourism and Cultural Programme who graced the event with and her husband cum co-presenter, Isaac Moses. She spoke to the girls on understanding their monthly calendar among other important areas. “Don’t let anything destroy your menstrual flow until you are married”, she told the girls.

Mrs Obidake Kehinde, Vice Principal of the school, appreciated the club and also had a message for the girls. “I want to appreciate the club for this gesture, especially our guest speaker. She has said a lot.

“Let your menstruation keep flowing until you are married. Your menstrual period is not something to be ashamed of. Be proud to be a girl, you don’t have to hide. When you are on your period, use your sanitary pad”, Mrs Kehinde said.
