No fewer than 40 students in Lagos state has been trained in Rotary Club of Lagos Island, District 9110’s free vocational training programme.

The students who were trained on “Travel Agency” were officially presented their certificates by the District 9110 Governor, Kola Sodipo alongside the club president, Raj Gulati following the successful completion of the training on Saturday, January 26, 2019.

DG Sodipo who congratulated the participants also commended for taking good advantage of this rare opportunity provided by the club.

“I have always told students that having a certificate is not just enough for our current economy in Nigeria, having a skill in addition to the certificate is also very important and this is what the club has helped those participants of the free vocational training to achieve. I thank the club for this impactful project", DG Sodipo

Addressing the club members during the club fellowship later that day, DG Sodipo said, “We have just witnessed the graduation ceremony and award of certificates to students who have learnt a skill in the area of travel agency.

“I have always told students that having a certificate is not just enough for our current economy in Nigeria, having a skill in addition to the certificate is also very important and this is what the club has helped those participants of the free vocational training to achieve. I thank the club for this impactful project”, DG Sodipo said.

Speaking further, the DG advised the club members saying, “For the club, I want to urge us to always abide by the rules and guiding principles of Rotary. We need to equip ourselves with Rotary knowledge. Knowledge is power. How do we acquire Rotary knowledge? We can learn from Rotary International website, we can learn by attending Rotary meetings and participating in Rotary training, and we can also learn by reading Rotary materials.

“There are three important qualities members of every Rotary club must have in order to maintain peace and growth in the clubs. They are humility, tolerance, and accountability. Even when you feel you do and know everything, let’s always be humble”, said DG Sodipo.

“Tolerance is also very important. Members of a club numbering 155 cannot always think or do things the same way. We disagree to agree so let’s always be tolerant of one another; even in leadership, tolerance is important”, the District Governor further said.

“In the area of accountability, we must always be accountable of any money spent in the club. Even The Rotary Foundation comes back years after a grant has been issued to verify that the project which was reported to have been carried out with the grant was truly carried out so we must always keep records”, DG Sodipo added.

The club, during the club fellowship, awarded some of its members for their contributions to The Rotary Foundation so far. The award plaques were presented to the awardees by DG Sodipo on behalf of the club.
