CONCERN for promotion of ethical values in work place, homes and government institutions was the crux of discourse at the annual Ethics in Business symposium organised by Rotary International District 9110, Nigeria with the theme: Ethical Revolution and Good Governance in Nigeria.

Speaking at the forum, the District Governor of District 9110, comprising Lagos and Ogun states, Otunba Bola Onabadejo, said the programme has become a mainstay event of the club because it is believed that Rotarians uphold ethical practices in their personal and corporate lives.

“We want to be at the forefront of championing ethical values and integrity in the country through the network of our members. No time can this campaign be more appropriate than this period when corruption and impunity has almost taken over the facet of our corporate entity,” he said.

Onabadejo called on members of the National Assembly to adopt the Rotary Four-Way Test, which has since 1934 been the most important document used for ethics evaluation used by Rotarians worldwide as a moral code for personal and business relationships. The Four-Way Test states: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

In the lead paper presented by the past District Governor, Adeniji Raji, he explained corruption as dishonest or illegal behavior such as bribery, examination malpractices, tribalism, fraudulent practices, African time syndrome, big-man syndrome, lack of respect for laws and regulations as well as inability to uphold moral values in our society.

Past President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Doyin Owolabi, who represented the incumbent president, assured of the institute’s support for upholding high ethical values with stern disciplinary measures already put in place by ICAN to discipline any erring member.

The Chairman, Organising Committee, 2015-2016 Ethics in Business Symposium, Sina Adepoju, remarked that upholding ethical standard begins with every individual and if every Nigerian can imbibe this culture, the country will be better place to live in.
